In january, heavy rain occurred over the northern part of Southestern Brazil and over large parts of the Northeast Region, due to the position of the upper level cyclonic vortex. Below average rainfall was observed over large areas of the Northern Region, Central Western Brazil, Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.
Six frontal systems affected the country in january. The presence of upper level cyclonic vortex near Northeast Brazil, prevented the displacement of these systems to low latitudes.
Above average SST was observed in central western Equatorial Pacific, but this still does not indicate the development of an ENSO episode.
The number of hot spots increased compared to january of last year, mainly in Rio Grande do Sul, Roraima, Mato Grosso do Sul, Pará, Mato Grosso e Tocantins. The low precipitation over these regions contributed to these occurrences.
