SUMMARY

Strong rainfall episodes were observed over Southeastern Brazil, mainly over São Paulo in the last week of February. Low pressure systems next to the coast caused instability and tropical storms over the continent. In Northeastern Brazil, positive precipitation anomalies were observed in northern Maranhão, Piauí and in western Bahia, while the remaining area experimented negative anomalies. In Southern and Central Brazil, negative rainfall anomalies predominated.

Negative SST anomalies were observed over Central-Eastern Equatorial Pacific, yelding -2,5oC near the Date Line, persisting La Niña episode conditions. Over Tropical Atlantic, no dipole configuration was observed. The Southern Oscilation Index was 0.8, the smallest value in the last eight months. The OLR anomaly field showed positive anomalies in Central-Eastern Equatorial Pacific in response to observed less than normal SST conditions. Negative OLR anomalies were observed over western Pacific, Indonesia and Northern Australia, featuring La Niña conditions. SLP and wind fields agree, showing anomalous anticyclonic circulation of Southern Subtropical Pacific High, supporting easterlies stronger than normal over Central Pacific.
