In April the rains remained below normal in most parts of Brazil. The progression of cold fronts and the cyclogeneses contributed to more than normal rainfall in the extreme southern parts of Rio Grande do Sul and the coastal parts of Santa Catarina and Paraná.
Due to changes in the Sea Surface Temperature pattern, principally in the equatorial regions of the Atlantic Ocean and near the northwest coast of Africa, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) was observed slightly to the south of its climatological position.
Due to dry conditions the beginning of the bush and forest fire season had an early start in Central Brazil and the interior Northeast Brazil.
