In May intense rainfall was observed in southern Brazil and in the Northeast Brazil. The South Atlantic subtropical high pressure center in this month has extended into the central parts of Brazil, where the rainfall was reduced. Towards the final days of the month two frontal systems advanced into the central parts of Brazil causing some precipitation and wind gusts in Paraná, São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul. During this event the city of Indaiatuba in the interior of São Paulo state was affected by a tornado, which caused some devastation.
The sea surface temperature distribution in the equatorial Pacific showed values near normal, indicating neutral conditions of the ENSO phenomenon.
The rainfall in most of the river basins of Brazil was scanty. However, a few extreme rainfall episodes and low levels of MLT, during this month, maintained the higher values of river discharge.
The vegetation fires in this month have increased by 150% in relation to the previous month, which is a dry season characteristic.
