SUMMARY

The winter season in Southern Hemisphere started on 21 June. In this month only one frontal system advanced to Northeast Brazil. The cold air mass that affected Brazil at the end of june was intense and caused temperature falls in all the regions of the country. In the tropical Atlantic the easterly wave disturbances, common in this period of the year, contributed to the observed rainfall in the eastern parts of Northeast Brazil.

The sea surface temperature registered above normal values over a large area of the Equatorial Pacific, with the exception of the west South American coastal waters. In the South Atlantic the intensification of the subtropical high also contributed to the above normal rainfall in Northeast Brazil.

The rainfall in most of the river basins of Brazil was scarce. Only some places like the southern portion of the Southeast Atlantic Basin and the Uruguay basin presented increases in the river discharge in relation to the previous month.

The number of vegetation fires in this month doubled in relation to the previous month but there was reduction of 66% in relation to the same month in the previous year. This was due to frequent inspections (policing of the fires) by the IBAMA (Environment Protection Institute of Brazil) in the state of Mato Grosso.
