SUMMARY

In July dry conditions prevailed over most of central Brazil. Large rainfall amounts were confined to extreme northern and eastern parts of the country where some stations reported precipitation in excess of the climatological normal. It should be stressed that the dry conditions have returned in southern Brazil, especially in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The temperatures were above normal in many parts of northern, northeastern and northern southeastern regions of Brazil. However, occasional penetration of cold air mass into south-central parts of Brazil caused declination of temperature. Frost and snow were reported, on some occasions, in the southern region.

In the Equatorial Pacific the surface temperatures maintained neutral condition pattern with respect to ENSO phenomenon, with somewhat warmer waters in the western parts of the Pacific.

The river discharges in the Brazilian basins decreased further from last month’s values, indicating low rainfall in the country during the month. However, higher-than-expected values were observed in the central and northeastern sectors of Paraná basin, in the southern parts of Southeast-Atlantic basin and in the Uruguay basin.

During the month 14000 vegetation fires were detected in the country. It is also seen that there was a significant rise in the hot spot frequency compared to the same month in the previous year, especially in the states of Amazonas and Mato Grosso do Sul.
