SUMMARY

During the month of August 2004 the penetration of cold air masses into the country have caused steep falls in the temperature in southern Brazil, where freezes (frost) and snowfall were recorded. In most parts of Brazil the small amounts of rainfall were near their climatological normals. However, in southern Brazil the rainfall was significantly below normal.

In the western Equatorial Pacific the surface waters were slightly warmer than their historical average. The international meteorological centers started issuing alerts for a possible configuration of a warm ENSO episode in the coming months.

The general dry conditions over the country have caused considerable increase in the hot spots (indicative of bush and forest fires) in relation to the previous month.
