SUMMARY

The month of August was marked by deficiency of rains all over Central Brazil. Low humidity and low rainfall were responsible for increase in forest and agricultural fires. Seven weak frontal systems moved north and northeast ward over south and southeastern regions. After reaching north of 20ēS they intensified somewhat and caused more than normal rainfall over the state of Bahia. One intense cold air mass drifted northward into central and central eastern parts of the country and was responsible for a 10ēC drop in the temperature in the whole of Brazil except northern parts of Amazon and northeast Brazil.

The oceanic and atmospheric circulation patterns indicate the continuation of the La Niña phenomenon with a slight increase of the area of negative SST anomalies in the Pacific in relation to the July situation
