SUMMARY

A considerable change in the climate situation over Central-South Brazil was observed from last month to this month (September). The passage of six frontal systems over the country were accompanied by intense cold air masses. In some places of southern Brazil temperatures below freezing point were observed. Heavy rains and stormy winds in some parts of Southern Brazil resulted in loss of human lives and property.

The El Niño conditions were well characterized in the western Pacific Ocean. Higher than normal temperatures in most parts of Central Brazil were related to this warm episode in the Pacífic.

The number of bush fires in Brazil (as seen from the hot spots in the satellite imagery) were 63% more than the same month last year. The largest contribution to this number came from Mato Grosso state.
