SUMMARY

The beginning of spring season was marked by temperature rise in many regions of the country. The September rainfall was deficient in the Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil where the observed monthly totals were less than 25 mm. Rainfall was below normal in the South and western North regions also. The number of cold frontal passages in the country was, however, normal. On occasions freezes were observed in the South region with temperatures falling below 2C in isolated areas.

In the Pacific Ocean the Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) continued to indicate a neutral pattern in terms of the effects of El Niño – Southern Oscillation (ENSO) in South America.

The water resources situation of the country remained the same as in the previous month with inflow rates below climatological values in all the river basins of Brazil.
