SUMMARY

The spring season in the Southern Hemisphere started on 22 September at 19:23 UTC. The rains in southern and southeastern regions of Brazil have increased slightly in relation to the previous month. During the month cold air mass penetrations into Brazil have caused weak morning frosts in the southern region and in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul. On a few occasions snow flakes were registered over the uplands of Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina states. In the northern region of Brazil the cold air incursion caused significant declination of temperature in Rondonia, Acre and Amazonas states.

The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) recorded higher than normal values in the western equatorial Pacific and lower than normal values in the region from the Peru coast to 130W. In the tropical North Atlantic the SST remained above normal as has been observed since August 2004. In general, the global oceanic and atmospheric indices show neutral conditions in terms of ENSO phenomenon.

Dry conditions in parts of the northern region of Brazil favored lower than normal river discharge values observed in the Amazon and Tocantins basins.

The forest fires detected in September 2005 were 22% higher than in the previous month, however they recorded approximately the same number as in the same month a year ago.
