In October the area of the warm water pool in the Tropical Pacific, characteristic of the El Niño phenomenon, has grown larger in comparison to the previous month. Near the Peru and Equador coasts the SST anomalies have turned positive, indicating intensification of the warm ENSO event in the Niño 1+2 region.
The rainfall over Brazil was scanty in October. Larger than normal rainfall occurred in South Brazil which was caused by cold frontal passages over the continent and cyclogenesis in the adjacent seas.
Due to prolonged dry conditions, the bush fires (and forest fires) have doubled in this month, in comparison with the previous October. There were occasions during the month when 3000 hot spots were observed in a single day in the states of Mato Grosso and Rondonia.
