SUMMARY

Rains, hail and gusty winds in South Brazil have marked the beginning of the month of October. Dry conditions have prevailed in the Northeast. However, frontal activity helped to bring some rains to the states of Sergipe and Alagoas. The temperatures remained high, recording positive anomalies, in the central and eastern parts of Brazil.

Regarding the water resources situation in Brazil, some increase in the inflow (runoff) into the reservoirs was observed in South Paraná, Uruguay, Southeast Atlantic basins in relation to the previous month. Notwithstanding improvement from the previous month, the low-rainfall conditions affected the runoff adversely and the reservoir levels were below MLT.

In spite of a reduction in the number of bush and forest fires compared to the previous month, the Northeast and Southeast regions of Brazil have recorded significant rise in the fire risk index due to the anomalous dry situation and warmer than normal maximum temperature conditions.
