SUMMARY

In October 2005 the rains were more frequent in southern Brazil. In the southeastern and central-western regions of Brazil a few short duration heavy rainfall episodes were registered, besides the cold frontal band type of rainfall. In the southeast Amazon region the rains in the second half of the month gave some relief from the dry conditions. In the northern-central region of the country the rainfall was scanty and the monthly totals were less than the climatological values.

In the eastern sector of the equatorial Pacific the sea surface temperatures were somewhat less than the normal values. However, the SST configuration is considered neutral with respect to ENSO phenomenon. In the tropical North Atlantic warmer surface waters continued to persist.

On the hydrological scene, in the Amazon, the Tocantins and the São Francisco basins and the northeastern part of the Paraná basin, the river discharges were below normal with respect to MLT.

Due to negative anomalies in the rainfall in Minas Gerais state, Northeastern Brazil, and Amazon basin, there was a 22% increase in the vegetation fires in the country with respect to the same month in 2004.
