The number of frontal system that affected Brazil in the month of october 1999 was six, one less than the climatological mean. The advance of cold air masses in the wake of the fronts determined the fall of temperature in the southern Brazil and frost formation in the Serra Gaucha region. The formation of a South Atlantic Convergence Zone (SACZ) during the period 23 to 31, affected the state of Bahia.
The La Niña situation in the Pacific continued to persist, however with weak to moderate intensity. The Sea Surface Temperature (SST) situation in the tropical Atlantic was normal, especially along the coast of Brazil.
